Regular Season Week 17
I hope your holidays were merry and bright. I also hope your football team added to the joy of the season, as mine did not.
I went 8-8 in picks last week and won the first of two weeks of the loser bracket of fantasy football playoffs. I’ll be so happy when that season is over.
I’m going to be honest, I didn’t watch that much football this past week. So the recap might be on the brief side.
Jaguars @ Jets 19-3
Zach Wilson was so bad for the Jets that he was booed until he was benched. Chris Steveler, who was elevated from the practice squad before the game, replaced Wilson late in the third quarter. Ouch. The Jags didn’t have their prettiest game but it was enough to beat the Jets.
Bills @ Bears 35-13
The Bills didn’t seem to be bothered by the cold temperatures during the game. They literally ran all over the Bears and got the win. The most frustrating part of their trip to Chicago was getting back home. Buffalo NY had to close their airport due to a freak blizzard and the Bills had to fly into Rochester and then take a bus to get back to Buffalo.
Saints @ Browns 17-10
It was so cold in Cleveland that even their crazy fans stayed home and the stadium was less than half full. It was also so cold that neither team scored in the first or last quarter. Alvin Kamara finally got a touchdown in the 3rd quarter, only the second game of the season in which he found the endzone. What a waste of a draft pick.
Texans @ Titans 19-14
This game had an hour delay because Nashville was dealing with power outages in the area due to the winter storm. This delay must have thrown off the Titans groove because the Texans snapped a 9 game losing streak to come out on top. With Ryan Tannahill out it was Malik Willis who got the start for the Titans. Willis had a rushing touchdown, zero passing touchdowns, but he did have two interceptions. Davis Mills, the Texans quarterback, had one passing touchdown and one interception. The difference maker in this game was Ka’imi Fairbairn who had two field goals to add to the winning score.
Seahawks @ Chiefs 10-24
It’s no surprise that the Chiefs won this game. After the game the team presented Andy Ried with a Christmas present. Spoiler, it was a cheese burger.
NY Giants @ Vikings 24-27
This was a heartbreaker of a game. It’s not the first time the Giants have lost on a last second 60+ yard field goal, but I hope it’s the last. Ugh. This was a winnable game, but the Giants made stupid mistakes and it cost us the game. Danny Jones had an interception, our defense couldn’t stop Kirk Cousins and Justin Jefferson when they absolutely needed to, Daniel Bellinger lost a fumble, Richie James dropped a pass that should've led to a touchdown… You get the point.
Bengals @ Patriots 22-18
The Bengals shut out the Patriots the first half of the game and the Patriots shut out the Bengals the second half of the game. The only difference was Cincinnati scored more points than the Patriots to get the win.
Lions @ Panthers 23-37
This game shocked me. I really thought the Lions would’ve walked all over the Panthers. But then I remembered, Jared Goff doesn’t do well outside, and the Carolina weather was less than desirable. But still, a shocking win for the Panthers in my opinion.
Falcons @ Ravens 9-17
The Ravens have shown that they don’t need Lamar Jackson to win games, in fact, they are doing just fine without him.
Commanders @ 49ers 20-37
With this loss the Commanders slip further from the playoffs. They haven’t been eliminated yet, but this loss didn’t help them.
Eagles @ Cowboys 34-40
I’m actually disappointed that the Eagles didn’t win this game. For the first time ever, I was actually rooting for them. Thanks a lot Cowboys.
Raiders @ Steelers 10-13
It was a close win but the Steelers came out on top. Pittsburgh honored the late Franco Harris with this win.
Packers @ Dolphins 26-20
The Packers are still technically alive in the playoff hunt with this win. In other news, Tua seems to have suffered another concussion during this game. This is doubly not good for the Dolphins.
Broncos @ Rams 14-51
We didn’t watch any of this game and looking at the final score we wish we had. What in the world happened to the Rams and the Broncos. So much for a great defense Denver! I lost 4 points in fantasy because of the Broncos defense. I guess it’s safe to say that Baker Mayfield feels pretty good in the Blue and Yellow.
Buccaneers @ Cardinals 19-16 OT
It took another overtime, but the Bucs got another win. After this loss, J.J. Watt announced that he would be retiring at the end of this season.
Chargers @ Colts 20-3
Well neither Justin Herbert nor Nick Foles had any touchdowns but Nick Foles did have 3 interceptions. The Chargers defense really stepped up and showed the Colts that just maybe Jeff Saturday isn’t the best interim coach in the NFL.
WEEK 17
Thursday, December 29th
Cowboys (11-4) @ Titans (7-8) (8:15pm Prime Video)
The Titans are riddled with injuries and Derrick Henry is questionable to play. With that said, I’m picking the Cowboys to win this game.
Sunday, January 1st HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Cardinals (4-11) @ Falcons (5-10) (1pm FOX)
With both teams already eliminated from the playoffs, this game is just for pride. I’m picking the Falcons to win this game of the angry birds.
Bears (3-12) @ Lions (7-8) (1pm FOX)
The Lions haven’t technically been eliminated from playoff contention but the Bears have been. The Lions will need a LOT of help if they hope to get into the postseason. First things first, they have to win. If they don’t win this game against the Bears their season is over. I’m picking the Lions to win but I am not guaranteeing they’ll get into the postseason.
Jaguars (7-8) @ Texans (2-12-1) (1pm CBS)
Even though they have a losing record the Jags are at the top of their division and will make the playoffs. Crazy. The Texans were eliminated months ago. I’m picking the Jags to win this game.
Broncos (4-11) @ Chiefs (12-3) (1pm CBS)
The Broncos fired their head coach after their humiliating loss last week. At this point Denver is just playing for pride. The Chiefs are definitely playoff bound and I am picking them to win this game as well.
Dolphins (8-7) @ Patriots (7-8) (1pm CBS)
Miami can clinch a playoff berth with: Miami win + NY Jets loss or tie OR a Miami tie + NY Jets loss + Pittsburgh loss or tie. The Patriots are on the outside looking in, but they haven’t technically been eliminated yet. They also need a lot of help, like a win against the Dolphins. The Dolphins will be without Tua, as he’s in concussion protocol. I am picking the Patriots to win this game.
Colts (4-10-1) @ NY Giants (8-6-1) (1pm CBS)
The Colts have been eliminated from the playoffs already and they are just hoping the season will end. The Giants playoff hopes are alive and well. All they have to do is win this game and they are in. But, if they don’t win, here are all the scenarios. New York clinches playoff berth with: NYG tie + SEA loss or tie + WAS loss or tie OR NYG tie + SEA loss or tie + DET loss or tie OR NYG tie + WAS loss or tie + DET loss or tie + GB loss or tie OR SEA loss + WAS loss OR SEA loss + DET loss + GB loss or tie OR WAS loss + DET loss + GB loss. Oh man, with all that said I’m going to pick the Giants to win this game so we don’t have to even think about the other scenarios. Go G-Men!
Saints (6-9) @ Eagles (13-2) (1pm FOX)
The Saints are technically still alive in the playoff hunt but they are also on the outside looking in. Like everyone else, first they have to win this game. I don’t think that is going to happen. I am picking the Eagles to win this game and that is regardless if Jalen Hurts plays.
Panthers (6-9) @ Buccaneers (7-8) (1pm FOX)
Crazy enough, both teams are still alive when it comes to playoff chances. The Bucs lead their division and can clinch a spot with a win. The Panthers would have to win to even keep their hopes alive. I don’t think that’s going to happen. I am picking the Bucs to win this game. It might take overtime, but I think they’ll get the win.
Browns (6-9) @ Commanders (7-7-1) (1pm FOX)
The Browns have already been eliminated from playoff contention and the Commanders need to win to stay in. They also need a little help from their friends. Washington can clinch a playoff berth with a win + SEA loss + DET loss + GB loss or tie. With that said the Commanders are going to be starting Carson Wentz so that should be interesting. Also, the Browns have a good defense and like to play spoilers. I am hoping that the Browns win this game but I’m picking the Commanders to win.
49ers (11-4) @ Raiders (6-9) (4:05pm)
Stuff is going down in Las Vegas. Earlier this week the organization decided to bench Derek Carr for the last two games of the season. This will end his consecutive starting streak, which is the second longest to only Tom Brady. And that’s just a really crappy thing to do. He can call Eli Manning to see how to cope with such assery. Also, the Raiders haven’t been officially eliminated from playoff contention, but with this move they are throwing in the towel. I feel awful for Carr and his fans. I don’t like the Raiders but this is not how you treat your QB. I’m picking the 49ers to win this game.
Jets (7-8) @ Seahawks (7-8) (4:05pm FOX)
Both teams have losing records and both teams haven’t been eliminated yet. Both teams are long shots in making the playoffs but you’re saying, “there’s still a chance.” Mike White will be back under center for the Jets so I think they have a solid chance at winning this game. The Seahawks also have a very good chance at winning this game. I think I’ll go with the home team to win this game.
Vikings (12-3) @ Packers (7-8) (4:25pm CBS)
It’s crazy to think that the Packers still have a chance at making the postseason. They HAVE TO win this game to stay alive. If Green Bay loses to the Vikings this week and the Lions beat the Bears at home, the Packers will be eliminated from playoff contention. Historically the Packers play very well against the Vikings. I am going to pick the Packers to win this game but I wouldn't be surprised or sad if I got this pick wrong.
Rams (5-10) @ Chargers (9-6) (4:25pm CBS)
The Rams are playing for pride right now and the Chargers have already punched their ticket for the playoffs. I could actually see the Rams winning this game and it wouldn’t surprise me at all. I am going to pick the Chargers for the win because the Rams haven’t won two in a row since Cooper Kupp was on the field.
Steelers (7-8) @ Ravens (10-5) (8:20pm NBC)
The Ravens have already punched their ticket to the playoffs and the Steelers are just fighting to stay alive. I think this game will be a good, close game. I’m picking the Ravens to win though.
Monday, January 2nd
Bills (12-3) @ Bengals (11-4) (8:30pm ESPN/ABC)
Both of these teams are already in the playoffs, and this could have a playoff game feel. Buffalo can clinch home-field advantage and AFC's lone first-round bye with: a win and a KC loss. I’ve already picked the Chiefs to win so I don’t think they lock up their first round bye but I do think the Bills will win this game, and I’m picking them to do so.
GO G-MEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the edit Eric!
