Regular Season Week 5
There are only two undefeated teams left as we go into week 5 and only one team that hasn't won a game yet this season. The Vikings and Chiefs are still perfect. Only the Jaguars have yet to win a game. I won in one league and lost in the other. PS, it’s not fun losing to my partner. “CMC Ya Next Season” (2-2), “Won’t You Be My Nabers” (2-2). Also, I went 8-8 in my picks, so I guess I could say I’m batting .500.
Week 5 will bring the first London game, the first bye week, and Crucial Catch month. Cancer sucks. We have all been personally affected one way or another by that horrible word. In the month of October, while watching the NFL, you’ll see some rainbow colors on uniforms, as well as some rainbow plaid prints on hats and hoodies. This is to show support, raise awareness, and bring attention to cancer, research, those lost, and the survivors. Since 2009, the first year of the NFL's Crucial Catch campaign, the NFL’s work has raised more than $30 million for the American Cancer Society and has supported over 762,000 cancer screenings. When you buy anything with the Crucial Catch logo on it from the NFL shop all proceeds go towards cancer research. The NFL does not retain any profits generated by royalties received due to the sale of Crucial Catch products. All dollars are donated to the American Cancer Society. Some cancers can be found early, before they have had a chance to grow and spread. The 5-year survival rate for many cancers is over 90% when detected early. Getting screened is crucial to catching cancer early when it may be easier to treat. Make your play and find your local cancer screening center. Please, get yourself checked, early detection saves lives. I had my mammogram last week, and for the couple of minutes of being uncomfortable during the examination, the relief of knowing I’m ok outweighs the few minutes of discomfort.
Let’s jump into the recap!
Cowboys @ NY Giants 20-15
Why did we have to beat Cleveland? All the false hope going into this game. What was most frustrating about this game? The ref's bad calls? The inability of our quarterback to make completions over 20 yards? To have zero touchdowns? To not be able to beat a division rival for the umpteenth time (7 consecutive)? It’s all frustrating. The refs are bad this year, across all games. In this particular game they called a facemask on the Giants and it was CLEARLY Dallas who was holding onto the Giants facemask. Was the call reversed? No. Did Daboll challenge it after the replay? No. Did New York, who is supposed to review every play, step in and change the call? No. It should have been an automatic first down that should have led to a touchdown but instead brought up a 3rd and long and our not talented quarterback couldn’t throw it far enough to make another first down. Why do we have New York if they don’t right the ref’s wrongs? Danny Jones didn’t have a single touchdown pass but had an interception. And our star WR Malik Nabers suffered a concussion in the 4th quarter because he was trying to win the game. Silver linings: We found a kicker who can actually make field goals most of the time. He had 5. At least this game was Thursday night so it didn’t ruin my weekend.
Broncos @ NY Jets 10-9
As much as I don’t like the Broncos I like Aaron Rodgers even less. It was nice to see the Broncos defense ruin his day.
Vikings @ Packers 31-29
I am still in disbelief that the Vikings are 4-0. I can’t accept it. Sam Darnold isn’t good. Why is this happening? Sorry Packers fans, it’s even worse to lose to a division rival. I know.
Saints @ Falcons 24-26
Atlanta finally wins their first home game of the season. Neither quarterback had a passing touchdown but both had an interception. It was kind of a messy game in which the defense of each team seemed to be better than the offense. For instance the first touchdown was a fumble recovery by Atlanta to put them up 7-0. The Saints answered back with a Taysom Hill rushing touchdown later in the first. The game went back and forth until the last few seconds of the game when a Saints penalty put the Falcons into field goal range. Younghoe Koo kicked the winning 58 yard field goal as time expired.
Eagles @ Buccaneers 16-33
Yeah Bucs! Get it Baker Mayfield! This game was fantastic. Mayfield threw for 347 yards and had two passing and one rushing touchdowns! Yes! Bucs win!
Bengals @ Panthers 34-24
The Bengals got their first win of the season! Joe Burrow has turned it around. It takes him a few games to get into the groove. Burrow had two passing touchdowns, one of which went to Ja’Marr Chase! Woot! He did have one interception. Andy Dalton also had two touchdowns and one interception for the Panthers.
Jaguars @ Texans 20-24
The Jags really aren’t good and the Texans seemed to be playing down to their level. Houston had punted on 5 straight possessions in the second half and it looked like the Jags were going to win this game until C.J. Stroud connected with Dare Ogunbowale on a one yard touchdown pass with 18 seconds left to win the game.
Steelers @ Colts 24-27
Anthony Richardson was injured early in this game and Joe Flacco took over. Flacco is special. He led the Browns to the playoffs last year and is now helping the Colts this season. Pittsburgh might have been prepared for Richardson but they weren’t ready for Flacco, note the final score.
Rams @ Bears 18-24
Caleb Williams is figuring it out. He led four scoring drives and the Bears beat the Rams because of it. Williams had one passing touchdown to DJ Moore, who of course was on my bench in fantasy. I’m glad things are finally clicking for the rookie quarterback. Maybe it’s time to start Moore again in fantasy.
Commanders @ Cardinals 42-14
Jayden Daniels embarrassed the Cardinals defense. Also, I don’t like that the Commanders are relevant.
Patriots @ 49ers 13-30
The 49ers bounced back even though they are injury ridden. It was their defense that really stepped up. Fred Warner had a pick six in the second quarter and then the offense started to click. It also helped that the Patriots are pretty bad this year.
Browns @ Raiders 16-20
Speaking of bad, the Browns are terrible. Cleveland had the Raiders shutout in the first quarter after an unlikely Deshaun Watson passing touchdown and a Dustin Hopkins field goal. After that it was all Raiders, who scored a combined 20 points in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, shutting out the Browns. The Browns tried to make a comeback in the fourth but it was too little too late.
Chiefs @ Chargers 17-10
It wasn’t pretty but the Chiefs got it done. Patrick Mahomes is killing me in fantasy. I actually don’t care if he’s winning games for his team because he is costing me games in fantasy. Son of a B!
Bills @ Ravens 10-35
The Bills got a reality check. It wasn’t fun to watch. What we learned: Derrick Henry is still relevant and Lamar Jackson has started to throw accurate passes. Henry had two total touchdowns and Jackson had two passing and one rushing touchdowns. Josh Allen had zero. It was ugly if you’re a Bills fan. Really ugly.
Titans @ Dolphins 31-12
The Dolphins made the Titans look good and that’s saying something. Thankfully there were two games on Monday night so you didn’t actually have to watch this one. It was also bad, like Bills - Ravens bad.
Seahawks @ Lions 29-42
Jared Goff threw a perfect game, setting an NFL record by completing all 18 of his passes. He did throw an incomplete pass, but it was negated by a penalty. Goff also had a touchdown reception for the first time in his career, catching a pass from Amon-Ra St. Brown. Jared threw one of his two touchdown passes to St. Brown as well. Goff and St. Brown are the eighth duo in league history to throw and catch a touchdown from each other. Honestly it was just nice to see the Lions win and the Seahawks lose.
WEEK 5
Thursday, October 3rd
Buccaneers (3-1) @ Falcons (2-2) (8:15pm PRIME VIDEO)
News alert. I am starting Baker Mayfield and benching Patrick Mahomes. Baker, please, please, please, have a game like you did last week. Please. I’d love 3 touchdowns and a lot of passing yards. I'd have said 5 touchdowns but I don’t want to sound greedy. Anyway, I’m picking the Bucs to win this game.
Sunday, October 6th
NY Jets (2-2) @ Vikings (4-0) (9:30am NFLN)
Note the time. This is the first London game of the season. The game will be played at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. I’m picking the Vikings to win this game. Aaron Rodgers injured his knee in the loss last week and because he’s old he’s not going to bounce back quickly. He IS old! He’s the oldest active player this season.
Ravens (2-2) @ Bengals (1-3) (1pm CBS)
I’m picking the Ravens to win this game but I’ll be rooting for the Bengals. One of my opponents is starting Lamar Jackson so I need him to have a dud of a game.
Colts (2-2) @ Jaguars (0-4) (1pm CBS)
The Jags haven’t won a game this season but the Colts haven’t won a game in Jacksonville in 10 years. The Colts last win in Jacksonville was in 2014. The Jags will be wearing their throwback jerseys in hopes to channel their past wins against this division rival. The Colts may be without Anthony Richards and Jonathan Taylor who are both questionable heading into this game. All that said, I am picking the Colts to break this curse and win this game.
Dolphins (1-3) @ Patriots (1-3) (1pm FOX)
This is another divisional game in which both teams are really bad. I think that the Patriots are going to bounce back and win a game at home and that's who I’m picking.
Browns (1-3) @ Commanders (3-1) (1pm FOX)
Ugh. I’m picking the Commanders to win this game.
Bills (3-1) @ Texans (3-1) (1pm CBS)
I’m picking the Bills to bounce back and win this game.
Panthers (1-3) @ Bears (2-2) (1pm FOX)
I’m picking the home team to win this week.
Raiders (2-2) @ Broncos (2-2) (4:05pm FOX)
Davante Adams may have already played his last game as a Raider. He wants a trade and will not suit up this weekend. I picked up the Broncos defense so I'm also going to pick them to win this game.
Cardinals (1-3) @ 49ers (2-2) (4:05pm FOX)
Even though the 49ers are pretty banged up I am still picking them to win this game. I just need them to allow a few Marvin Harrison Jr touchdowns. Please and thank you.
Packers (2-2) @ Rams (1-3) (4:25pm CBS)
The Rams are another team that is already banged up this season. I am picking the Packers to win this game.
NY Giants (1-3) @ Seahawks (3-0) (4:25pm CBS)
Thankfully I have a family reunion Sunday so I won’t have to watch this game. With Nabers most likely out, because he’s still in concussion protocol, there is no way for the Giants to win. I’m picking the Seahawks to win this game. Go Giants.
Cowboys (2-2) @ Steelers (3-1) (8:20pm NBC/Peacock)
I am picking the Steelers to improve to 4-1. Boo Cowboys.
Monday, October 7th
Saints (2-2) @ Chiefs (4-0) (8:15pm ESPN)
This game will be ugly but the Chiefs will still squeak out another win. Watch, now that I’ve benched Mahomes he’ll have 5 touchdowns.
BYE: Lions, Titans, Eagles, Chargers
GO G-MEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the edit Eric!
