Wild Card Weekend

Happy New Year! It’s a new decade, can we call it the roaring 20’s? I wish you all the best in 2020!

In the NFL, the Monday after the last game of the regular season is called Black Monday. This is the time you fear, if you are a mediocre coach in the NFL. Here is a list of all the firings so far. Giants head coach, Pat Shurmur with a 9-23 record. Browns head coach, Freddie Kitchens, with a 6-10 record. Panthers head coach, Ron Riviara, with a 76-63-1 record. Redskins head coach, Jay Gruden, with a 35-49-1 record. Cowboys head coach, Jason Garrett, with a 59-48 record. I’m not surprised with any of these firings, and not at all upset with seeing Coach Shurmur out as a Giant, though I was much, much, much, more happy when they let McAdoo go… I know it’s a crazy thought but I would love it if Bill Belichek was the next head coach of the Giants.

Week 17 brought a lot of craziness with some teams still trying to get into the playoffs while other teams resting their players for the playoffs. It made picking games a little challenging. For instance, only crazy Dolphins fans would have picked Miami to beat New England. With that said, I went 9-7 on picks. Not my best week, but definitely not my worst.

We are heading into Wild Card weekend; two games today and two games tomorrow.

But first, here is the recap for week seventeen.

Jets @ Bills 13-6
This seemed to be a pretty boring game where no one really wanted to win. I know that the Bills rested a bunch of their players in preparation for the postseason but I really thought they would have won the last home game of the regular season.

Browns @ Bengals 23-33
The Browns are so dysfunctional they couldn’t even beat a team that had only one win on the season going into the LAST game of the regular season. This will also probably be Andy Dalton’s last game as a Bengal so I guess it’s good that he got the win.

Packers @ Lions 23-20
The Packers looked absolutely terrible this entire game. I’m actually amazed that they pulled out the win, but then again they did play the Lions…

Chargers @ Chiefs 21-31
Because the Pats lost to the Dolphins (which no one saw coming) the Chiefs get a first round bye and a divisional game at home. It also helped that the Chiefs won this game, and are looking pretty strong going into the postseason.

Bears @ Vikings 21-19
Eddy Pineiro, the Bears most recent kicker, kicked 4 field goals to put the Bears over the Vikings… His last field goal was the game winner. Oh how times have changed for the Bears. Too soon?

Dolphins @ Patriots 27-24
I really still can’t believe that the Dolphins beat the Patriots. The Dolphins, with only one away win under their belt, went into Foxborough, and got the W! Ryan Fitzpatrick was truly Fitzmagic and the other Dolphins were tenacious in their last game of the season. I mean if it has to be the last game of the season, it’s good to finish with a win.

Falcons @ Buccaneers 28-22 OT
These two teams battled back and forth sending the game into overtime, where Jamis Winston threw an interception on the first play ending in a pick six and a Falcons win. I am just shocked to hear that Jamis Winston threw an interception! (That’s my sarcastic font)

Saints @ Panthers 42-10
The Saints rolled over the Panthers and are rolling into the postseason. Drew Brees continued to break his own touchdown passing record with another 3 touchdowns in this game as the Saints routed the Panthers. I think that the Saints are ready for the postseason and the Panthers are ready to sit on their couches and just watch.

Redskins @ Cowboys 16-47
The Cowboys played their little hearts out but they needed an Eagles loss to make it into the playoffs. Spoiler alert, the Cowboys didn’t make it into the playoffs after this monstrous win over the Redskins and Jason Garrett, head coach of the Cowboys, lost his job.

Raiders @ Broncos 15-16
It was a longshot for the Raiders to even make it into the playoffs, they needed a win and a lot of help from other teams. They didn’t get either. The Raiders tried to win on the last play of the game by going for the two point conversion rather than kicking the extra point sending the game into overtime. Derek Carr’s pass was swatted down short of the goal line ending the game and the Raiders season.

Cardinals @ Rams 24-31
The Rams finally got their sh** together and played like the team they were last year. Unfortunately it came way too late to make the postseason. Oh well, maybe next season.

Eagles @ NY Giants 34-17
This game sucked. I cried at the end. It was the last Giants game of the decade, the last Eli Manning in a Giants uniform game, and a stupid loss to the Eagles.

Colts @ Jaguars 20-38
I’d like to say that I’m shocked that the Jags won this game, but both teams struggled this entire season. I think I’m actually more surprised the game didn’t end in a tie.

Steelers @ Ravens 10-28
The Ravens sat all of their starters. RG3 was the quarterback for the Ravens and the Steelers still couldn’t get a win to make it to the postseason. Sorry, not sorry.

Titans @ Texans 35-14
The Titans did indeed win this game and make it to Wild Card Weekend, but was it really a game without Deshaun Watson and DeAndre Hopkins.

49ers @ Seahawks 26-21
The ending of this game was much like the ending of the 49ers Falcons game. It was a last second touchdown pass at the goal line for the Seahawks to win it as time expired, only the Seahawks were just an inch short of the goal line.

Wild Card Weekend

Saturday, January 4th

Bills (10-6) @ Texans (10-6) [4:35pm ESPN/ABC]
Both teams lost their final game of the regular season so they don’t have that momentum going into this game. The Bills haven’t won a playoff game in 25 years.. J.J. Watt is back for the Texans, who had surgery early this season for a torn pectoral muscle. In picking this game my hearts says Bills and my head says Texans. I’m going with my head and hoping I’m wrong. GO BILLS!!!!

Titans (9-7) @ Patriots (12-4) [8:15pm CBS]
As much as I want the Titans to win, and I’m hoping they do just that, the Pats just don’t lose consecutive home games. The last time they lost 2 home games in a row was 2006. I’ll be rooting for the Titans but picking the Pats to win.

Sunday, January 5th

Vikings (10-6) @ Saints (13-3) [1:05pm FOX]
Last year these two teams met up in the postseason in what was called the Minnesota Miracle. The game was played in Minneapolis, the Saints had the lead with just seconds left and somehow Case Keenum connected with Stefon Diggs for a Vikings touchdown to win the game. This time I think things will be different. For one, Keenum is no longer the quarterback for the Vikings, it’s Kirk Cousins. For another, this game will be played in New Orleans, which bodes well for the Saints. I think that the Saints will win this game and that’s who I’m picking.

Seahawks (11-5) @ Eagles (9-7) [4:40pm NBC]
Seattle only plays close games. The Eagles are super beat up, but then again the Seahawks had to call Marshawn Lynch out of retirement because they are pretty beat up too. Fun Facts: Russell Wilson is 4-0 against the Eagles in postseason. Carson Wentz has never played in the postseason. I’m picking the Seahawks for the win.

Thanks for the edit Eric!
