Conference Championship

Today is the last Sunday of the season where there will be more than one football game on. We have reached the Conference Championship. These games will decide who will be in Super Bowl 54. Next week the only “game” will be the Pro Bowl, and that is probably as much as I’ll write about it. The following Sunday is Super Bowl 54. I’m getting way ahead of myself.

I went 3-1 in my picks last week. I was stunned to see the Ravens lose, but I got all the other picks correct. My record this season is 171-93, which is better than all of the insiders on Inside the NFL. Patting myself on the back.

Here is the recap for the Divisional Round.

Vikings @ 49ers 10-27
Both teams had an interception but it was the 49ers defense that showed up big and helped win the game for San Francisco. At one point the 49ers defense didn’t allow Minnesota to gain a first down for more than 27 minutes! That, coupled with a Kirk Cousins’ interception that lead to an easy walk in touchdown from Tevin Coleman made it look like a pretty easy win for the 49ers. This is the 49ers first win in a playoff game in six years. The next game for the 49ers will be at home versus the Packers.

Titans @ Ravens 28-12Tennessee scored all of their points off takeaways or fourth-down stops in this game, meaning when the Ravens tried to convert on fourth down and were not successful the Titans would score on the following possession. Let that sink in. It became quite apparent that the Ravens do not play well when they are trailing, which they did the entire game. Lamar Jackson threw a pick early in the first quarter, which was the beginning of the end for the Ravens. Jackson had 2 interceptions in the game and one passing touchdown. Even though he lead his team in rushing with 143 yards, the pressure of this game really rattled him. On the other hand, Titans RB Derrick Henry, was unstoppable in his run game, with 30 carries for 195 yards. He also had a receiving touchdown. The Titans will be moving on to Kansas City for the Conference Championship and the Ravens will just go home.

Texans @ Chiefs 31-51I used to watch a lot of football with my father. When a game started really lopsided, he would say, “oh they (the trailing team) are just building up the other team’s confidence, just wait.” Houston jumped out to a 24 point lead early in the second quarter and I thought I had entered an alternate universe, almost like watching the Titans beat up on the Ravens. The Chiefs had definitely built up the Texans’ confidence, as my dad would say. It was time for KC to strike. The Chiefs put up 28 points in the second quarter and took the lead going into half time. It was an amazing comeback and it didn’t stop at half time. The Chiefs dominated the second half as well scoring another 23 points to Houston’s 7. The Chiefs actually shut out the Texans in the fourth quarter. Kansas City will host the Tennessee Titans in the Conference Championship and the Houston Texans will also go home.

Seahawks @ Packers 23-28Russell Wilson is now 0-4 as a starter at Lambeau and the Seahawks are now 1-10 all time in the Packers’ Stadium. It looks like the Packers are Wilson’s kryptonite. Aaron Rodgers connected with Davante Adams eight times for 160 yards and two touchdowns. It was reminiscent of the Rodgers - Jordy Nelson era. Wilson was well on his way to lead the Seahawks to a comeback win late in the fourth quarter, but the Packers defense forced a punt and the Seahawks never got the ball back. Rogers and team sealed the win with two third down conversions and were able to run out the clock on the Seahawks. The Packers will travel to San Francisco for the Conference Championship and the Seahawks will travel to their couches to watch the rest of the postseason.

Conference Championship

Sunday, January 19th

Titans @ Chiefs [3:05pm CBS]The Titans haven’t won a Conference Championship since 1999 and haven’t appeared in a title game since 2002. The Chiefs were in the championship game just last season against the Patriots, but haven’t made it to the Super Bowl in 50 years. Both teams have great play makers, the only one that stands out for the Titans is Derrick Henry. Kansas City has Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, and Travis Kelsey. I think they have more weapons on their team. Titans head coach, Mike Vrabel, has never coached this deep into the postseason, while Chiefs’ Andy Reid is a veteran. The Titans have surprised me every game this postseason. I hope they don’t surprise me again today. I’m rooting for and picking the Chiefs to win this game.

Packers @ 49ers [6:40pm FOX]The Packers have the stronger quarterback in Aaron Rodgers, but the 49ers have the stronger defense. This should be a good game to watch. If the 49ers win this game they will become the second team in NFL history to make the Super Bowl a year after losing at least 12 games in the season before. The Saint Louis Rams are the only other team to do it. If the 49ers defense can shut down the Rodgers - Adams show, as well as Aaron Jones run game they will be going to the Super Bowl. The Packers defense needs to get to Jimmy Garoppolo early and shut down the Niners running game to be successful. I think the Packers have the harder challenge. Defensive end, Nick Bosa, will be in Rodgers face all day long and George Kittle will taunt the Packers defense. This will be a rematch game from week 12 of the regular season where the 49ers embarrassed the Packers 37-8. I think this game will be closer than week 12 but I still think that the 49ers will win. I’m picking San Francisco to win this game.

Thanks for the edit Eric!

The Shenoa Report Divisional Round '20

The Shenoa Report
January 11, 2020
Divisional Round

Guys, it’s 63 degrees outside right now. Therefore we spent the past couple of hours outside doing some yard work rather than writing my report. Nothing like procrastination. If it weren’t for the last minute, I’d have no time at all.
First off, I want to send out my sincerest condolences to the Bills and Saints fans. That’s not the way the games were supposed to go. And saying the refs didn’t help is a vast understatement. Maybe next season…
The NFL coaching carousel continues to spin. The NY Giants made the biggest spin by hiring Joe Judge. Who? It’s like the 2019 Draft all over again. But really who is Joe Judge? He was most recently the fricken special team coordinator/wide receivers coach for the Patriots… I can’t even. Icing on the cake, they gave him a 5 year contract! Now Jerry Jones and the Cowboys look like the level headed ones by picking up former Green Bay head coach, Mike McCarthy.  Mike McCarthy did spend the night at Jerry Jones’ house before the deal was made though… Matt Rhule, Baylor football coach has become the new head coach for the Panthers. While Ron Rivera, former Panthers head coach, becomes the Redskins head coach. The Browns, though they haven’t made a decision yet are leaning to Josh McDaniels, Patriots offensive coordinator.

I went 2-2 in my picks last week. I was ok getting the Pats - Titans game wrong, I was not ok with getting the Saints - Vikings game wrong.

We are heading into the division round this weekend weekend; two games today and two games tomorrow.

But first, here is the recap for Wild Card Weekend.

Bills  @ Texans 19-22 OT
In true Bills fashion, they blew a 16 point lead in the third quarter and ended up losing the game in overtime. The refs were not on their side, for sure, but Josh Allen didn’t really do the Bills any favors. Bills fans everywhere are still discussing, quite vehemently, three key plays during this game. The first one was when Texans’ kick returner DeAndre Carter caught the ball in the endzone and then nonchalantly tossed it to the official. The ref treated it like a live ball and one of the Bills players picked it up, recovering the fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. But then the officials decided to change their ruling with “common sense” even though Carter did not kneel or call a fair catch…. Now the NFL is going to have to clarify what a player needs to do to clearly “give yourself up”. The second play came in overtime when the Bills were nearing field-goal range to attempt a game winning field goal. Unfortunately officials called Bills’ right tackle, Cody Ford for a blindside block and backed them up 15 yards and out of field goal range. Only, it wasn’t actually a BLINDSIDE BLOCK! The last play happened in overtime when the referees appeared to miss a critical delay of game on the Texans winning drive. Twitter erupted with screen shots of the play clock showing 0.0 before Deshawn Watson snapped the ball. This delay of game could have ended the drive, giving the Bills a chance to get the ball and try to score in OT. Maybe next season Bills…
The Texans move on to face the Chiefs.

Titans @ Patriots 20-13
I got this pick wrong and I’m totally ok with it.  Although the Patriots scored first they didn’t score at all in the second half. Titans’ Derrick Henry ran all over the Pats with 182 rushing yards and a touchdown. One of Tennessee’s scoring drives was 75 yards where Henry had all of the yards, except for the touchdown. It became glaringly clear that New England did not have an answer for Henry. Tom Brady had a chance to win the game for the Patriots in the final seconds of regulation but instead threw a pick six to former Patriot Logan Ryan. It was pretty poetic if you ask me.

Vikings @ Saints 26-20 OT
I just don’t know what happened to the Saints. They should have blown the Vikings right out of the Super Dome. I’m still a little miffed. I mean, the Vikings did get back Dalvin Cook who had been out for the last two games of the regular season with a shoulder injury. But that shouldn’t have been a game changer. Only it was. Cook had 130 yards from scrimmage and scored two touchdowns in this win over the Saints. Unfortunately, I knew this Saints senario all too well having Drew Brees, Alvin Kamara, and Jared Cook on my fantasy team this past season. Brees instead of multiple touchdowns he had multiple turnovers, Kamara was abysmal with 21 total rushing yards, and Cook was pretty much absent.
The Saints had another non-call that should have been a penalty in overtime, which would have taken away the game winning touchdown for the Vikings. It was clear that Kyle Rudolph pushed off a defender to catch the game winning touchdown… Only, the refs didn’t even review it… Sorry Saints fans, maybe next season. The Vikings will travel to San Fransisco to play the 49ers.

Seahawks @ Eagles 17-9
Russell Wilson was in his element, having already beaten the Eagles four other times in the playoffs, this game made it 5 times. Wilson threw a 53 yard touchdown pass to DK Metcalf and Marshawn Lynch had a rushing score as well in this win. Jadeveon Clowney knocked out Carson Wentz, who had never played in a playoff game before, and still hasn’t finished a playoff game. Nick Foles wasn’t in Philadelphia this time to rescue the Eagles. Josh McCown, forty year old back up quarterback, took over for the injured Wentz and because Philadelphia failed to activate a third string quarterback before the game McCown finished the game with a torn hamstring. The Seahawks will be traveling to Green Bay to take on the Packers in the Divisional Round.

Divisional Round

Saturday, January 11th

Vikings (10-6)  @ 49ers (13-3) [4:35pm NBC]
I think this is going to be a pretty evenly matched game. The 49ers are coming off their bye refreshed and ready to go. The Vikings are flying high after beating the Saints in the Super Dome, which no one saw coming except maybe die hard Vikings fans. I’m picking the 49ers to win this game, if only for home field advantage. But, after the Vikings win last week I wouldn’t be surprised if they shocked the 49ers. We’ll see.

Titans (9-7) @ Ravens (14-2) [8:15pm CBS]
Even though the Titans spoiled the Pats chance at another Super Bowl appearance I don’t think they are going to be able to knock off the Ravens. Then again I was shocked to see the Vikings and the Titans win last weekend sooo…. Who knows. I’m picking the Ravens to win this game because I don’t think that the Titans can contain Lamar Jackson. This game will have 5 Heisman Trophy Winners on the sidelines Lamar Jackson, RG3, Mark Ingram, Derrick Henry, and Marcus Mariota, which is just an interesting fun fact. We might not see Robert Griffin or Marcus Mariota because they are both backup QBs or Mark Ingram because he may not play due to injury.

Sunday, January 12th

Texans (10-6) @ Chiefs (12-4) [3:05pm CBS] .
Both Deshaun Watson and Patrick Mahomes were in the same draft class and picked 10th and 12th overall. The Chiefs moved up to get Mahomes and the Texans pounced to get Watson. Now these two quarterbacks will face off in the playoffs for the first time. These teams played each other in week 6 of the regular season with the Texans getting the win. I don’t think they will win this time around. I’m picking the Chiefs to win this game.

Seahawks (11-5) @ Packers (13-3) [6:40pm FOX]
I don’t know, this is the toughest game for me to pick. The Packers haven’t wowed me at all this year, especially because I had Aaron Rodgers as my starting quarterback in fantasy and he let me down more than anyone else. On the other side of the field I had Tyler Lockett, Seattle’s wide receiver, who wasn’t much better. Green Bay is supposed to get about a foot of snow this weekend which could make things a little more exciting. Wilson is 0-3 as a starter at Lambeau and the Seahawks are 1-9 all time in the Packers’ Stadium. Statistics are fun. With that all being said I think I’m going to continue my trend and go with the home team for the win. I’m picking the Packers to win this game but wouldn’t be surprised if the Seahawks spoiled it.

The Shenoa Report Wild Card Weekend '20 #theshenoareport

The Shenoa Report
January 4, 2020
Wild Card Weekend

Happy New Year! It’s a new decade, can we call it the roaring 20’s? I wish you all the best in 2020!

In the NFL, the Monday after the last game of the regular season is called Black Monday. This is the time you fear, if you are a mediocre coach in the NFL. Here is a list of all the firings so far. Giants head coach, Pat Shurmur with a 9-23 record. Browns head coach, Freddie Kitchens, with a 6-10 record. Panthers head coach, Ron Riviara, with a 76-63-1 record. Redskins head coach, Jay Gruden, with a 35-49-1 record. Cowboys head coach, Jason Garrett, with a 59-48 record. I’m not surprised with any of these firings, and not at all upset with seeing Coach Shurmur out as a Giant, though I was much, much, much, more happy when they let McAdoo go… I know it’s a crazy thought but I would love it if Bill Belichek was the next head coach of the Giants.

Week 17 brought a lot of craziness with some teams still trying to get into the playoffs while other teams resting their players for the playoffs. It made picking games a little challenging. For instance, only crazy Dolphins fans would have picked Miami to beat New England. With that said, I went 9-7 on picks. Not my best week, but definitely not my worst.

We are heading into Wild Card weekend; two games today and two games tomorrow.

But first, here is the recap for week seventeen.

Jets @ Bills 13-6
This seemed to be a pretty boring game where no one really wanted to win. I know that the Bills rested a bunch of their players in preparation for the postseason but I really thought they would have won the last home game of the regular season.

Browns @ Bengals 23-33
The Browns are so dysfunctional they couldn’t even beat a team that had only one win on the season going into the LAST game of the regular season. This will also probably be Andy Dalton’s last game as a Bengal so I guess it’s good that he got the win.

Packers @ Lions 23-20
The Packers looked absolutely terrible this entire game. I’m actually amazed that they pulled out the win, but then again they did play the Lions…

Chargers @ Chiefs 21-31
Because the Pats lost to the Dolphins (which no one saw coming) the Chiefs get a first round bye and a divisional game at home. It also helped that the Chiefs won this game, and are looking pretty strong going into the postseason.

Bears @ Vikings 21-19
Eddy Pineiro, the Bears most recent kicker, kicked 4 field goals to put the Bears over the Vikings… His last field goal was the game winner. Oh how times have changed for the Bears. Too soon?

Dolphins @ Patriots 27-24
I really still can’t believe that the Dolphins beat the Patriots. The Dolphins, with only one away win under their belt, went into Foxborough, and got the W! Ryan Fitzpatrick was truly Fitzmagic and the other Dolphins were tenacious in their last game of the season. I mean if it has to be the last game of the season, it’s good to finish with a win.

Falcons @ Buccaneers 28-22 OT
These two teams battled back and forth sending the game into overtime, where Jamis Winston threw an interception on the first play ending in a pick six and a Falcons win. I am just shocked to hear that Jamis Winston threw an interception! (That’s my sarcastic font)

Saints @ Panthers 42-10
The Saints rolled over the Panthers and are rolling into the postseason. Drew Brees continued to break his own touchdown passing record with another 3 touchdowns in this game as the Saints routed the Panthers. I think that the Saints are ready for the postseason and the Panthers are ready to sit on their couches and just watch.

Redskins @ Cowboys 16-47
The Cowboys played their little hearts out but they needed an Eagles loss to make it into the playoffs. Spoiler alert, the Cowboys didn’t make it into the playoffs after this monstrous win over the Redskins and Jason Garrett, head coach of the Cowboys, lost his job.

Raiders @ Broncos 15-16
It was a longshot for the Raiders to even make it into the playoffs, they needed a win and a lot of help from other teams. They didn’t get either. The Raiders tried to win on the last play of the game by going for the two point conversion rather than kicking the extra point sending the game into overtime. Derek Carr’s pass was swatted down short of the goal line ending the game and the Raiders season.

Cardinals @ Rams 24-31
The Rams finally got their sh** together and played like the team they were last year. Unfortunately it came way too late to make the postseason. Oh well, maybe next season.

Eagles @ NY Giants 34-17
This game sucked. I cried at the end. It was the last Giants game of the decade, the last Eli Manning in a Giants uniform game, and a stupid loss to the Eagles.

Colts @ Jaguars 20-38
I’d like to say that I’m shocked that the Jags won this game, but both teams struggled this entire season. I think I’m actually more surprised the game didn’t end in a tie.

Steelers @ Ravens 10-28
The Ravens sat all of their starters. RG3 was the quarterback for the Ravens and the Steelers still couldn’t get a win to make it to the postseason. Sorry, not sorry.

Titans @ Texans 35-14
The Titans did indeed win this game and make it to Wild Card Weekend, but was it really a game without Deshaun Watson and DeAndre Hopkins.

49ers @ Seahawks 26-21
The ending of this game was much like the ending of the 49ers Falcons game. It was a last second touchdown pass at the goal line for the Seahawks to win it as time expired, only the Seahawks were just an inch short of the goal line.

Wild Card Weekend

Saturday, January 4th

Bills (10-6) @ Texans (10-6) [4:35pm ESPN/ABC]
Both teams lost their final game of the regular season so they don’t have that momentum going into this game. The Bills haven’t won a playoff game in 25 years.. J.J. Watt is back for the Texans, who had surgery early this season for a torn pectoral muscle. In picking this game my hearts says Bills and my head says Texans. I’m going with my head and hoping I’m wrong. GO BILLS!!!!

Titans (9-7) @ Patriots (12-4) [8:15pm CBS]
As much as I want the Titans to win, and I’m hoping they do just that, the Pats just don’t lose consecutive home games. The last time they lost 2 home games in a row was 2006. I’ll be rooting for the Titans but picking the Pats to win.

Sunday, January 5th

Vikings (10-6) @ Saints (13-3) [1:05pm FOX]
Last year these two teams met up in the postseason in what was called the Minnesota Miracle. The game was played in Minneapolis, the Saints had the lead with just seconds left and somehow Case Keenum connected with Stefon Diggs for a Vikings touchdown to win the game. This time I think things will be different. For one, Keenum is no longer the quarterback for the Vikings, it’s Kirk Cousins. For another, this game will be played in New Orleans, which bodes well for the Saints. I think that the Saints will win this game and that’s who I’m picking.

Seahawks (11-5) @ Eagles (9-7) [4:40pm NBC]
Seattle only plays close games. The Eagles are super beat up, but then again the Seahawks had to call Marshawn Lynch out of retirement because they are pretty beat up too. Fun Facts: Russell Wilson is 4-0 against the Eagles in postseason. Carson Wentz has never played in the postseason. I’m picking the Seahawks for the win.
