Super Bowl LVIII

Happy Super Bowl Sunday. We made it. Did Taylor Swift? Time will tell. Are you excited? I’m meh. I always have mixed feelings about the Super Bowl. If my team is in it I’m super nervous, emotionally unstable, and I hang on to every play. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions for sure. If my team isn’t in the big game I’m a little bit more level headed but, because I like sports in general, I still have much of the above stated emotions but not as intense. This year, I like both teams. It’s essentially a rematch of Super BowI 54 that started off 2020. The Chiefs and 49ers are meeting again for the 2nd time in 4 years. Back in early 2020 we didn’t know about the pandemic, covid, and how utterly dumb people actually are. This year things are kinda sorta back to normal-ish. Covid hasn’t been eradicated but we, not the collective we I’m speaking of me and my partner, are living with it and making better choices to keep people safe. Today I don’t feel like I’m in the Super Bowl mood. I’ve always loved talking about football, watching football, and writing about football. But right now, my heart isn’t in it. It’s been a year. I know it’s only February.

You may have noticed I didn’t write anything last week. It was nice to take a week off. I don't know if I’ve ever done a report  for the Pro-Bowl. Honestly, we haven’t watched it yet. We didn’t even get through all of the team challenges. We did record them, just haven’t gotten around to watching. Our minds are on other things. I also don’t know who won all the awards from the football honors. The only one I happened to see was Joe Flacco winning comeback player of the year. Damar Hamlin was also in that category. Seriously? They got that one wrong in my opinion. One person died on the field of play and had to be brought back to life and the other person was watching football on the couch and asked to come back to play. This isn’t even comparable. Are you kidding me?!?! Fail.

Ok. Before we get to the Super Bowl let's talk about the games that got us there.

Chiefs @ Ravens 17-10

The Ravens never really got into a rhythm and the Chiefs were vintage from the start. The Chiefs led 17-7 at halftime. With 3 minutes to go in the 4th quarter the score was still the same as at the half.  Justin Tucker's 43-yard field goal with 2:34 to play in the game was the only scoring of the second half. After the score the Ravens gave the ball back to the Chiefs. On third-and-9, Mahomes connected with Marquis Valdes-Scantling, who held on and knew exactly what that catch meant. The Chiefs were able to run out the clock and punch their ticket to the Super Bowl for the 3rd time in 4 years.

One more thing. For those of you hating on Taylor Swift, during this game she was shown on the broadcast 4 times for a total duration of 32 SECONDS out of a 3+hr game. Taylor doesn’t ask to be on TV at the game. In fact, she’s asked to not be shown.  You don’t have to like her music to respect what she’s done. She’s a pretty fantastic business woman and humanitarian. She’s a woman supporting her boyfriend, just as he’s supported her. Maybe their love will last, maybe it won’t, but can’t we be hopeful and happy for someone else’s happiness? Girls are empowered by seeing her, as they should be. Stop knocking down someone's role model with ugliness.

If this still bothers you just remember, your daughters, mothers, sisters, girl friends, are watching you hate Taylor Swift for supporting her boyfriend. AND when they hear you complain about her taking 32 seconds of air time out of a three hour game… What they actually hear is: ‘be smaller, be less’.

DO BETTER!

Lions @ 49ers 31-31

It was a tale of two halves. The Lions won the first half and the 49ers won the second. It’s really just the second half that matters. I still don’t know what happened. Like, honestly I’ve blocked most of this game from memory because I so wanted the Lions to win and make it to their first Super Bowl. The 49ers had other plans in mind. The Lions were up 24-7 going into the half. They then forgot how to play football the second half of the game. It was just the opposite for the 49ers. If I could pick one pivotal moment from the entire game it was when Brock Purdy threw a 51 yard pass that deflected off the defenders facemask and into the hands of Brandon Aiyuk that led to a touchdown and an epic comeback. So, there you have it. The Lions couldn’t get it done and now we’ll have a Super Bowl repeat with the 49ers and Chiefs.

Super Bowl 58 will be televised nationally on CBS.

This is a rematch of Super Bowl LIV, after the 2019 season, in which the Chiefs beat the 49ers 31-20. This is Kansas City's fourth appearance in the big game in five years. The last time the 49ers won the Super Bowl was after the 1994 season in Super Bowl XXIX.

I’m all in on the Chiefs. I’ve got the t-shirt which I purchased for Super Bowl LIV. Patrick Mahomes was my fantasy quarterback this past season. Although I don’t actively listen to Taylor Swift's music I think she’s an AMAZING human being and I support her and Travis Kelce 100%. So, there you go. I’m picking the Chiefs to win this game.

Thanks for reading #theshenoareport ! Until next season….
